Good Morning,
Something that caught my eye while reading chapter 5 was the part about adapting to the stetting. It sounds like a good idea to research your location and to feel comfortable giving your speech. I can see where it might work for some people and help others; however, I find my fear isn’t where I am going to give my speech, my fear is knowing there will be people there I do not know. The unfamiliarity of a location is not what has me shaking in my boots; it is the people. A perfect speech for me would be to give it in an empty room. I do like to know the outlay of the room I would be giving a speech, to know where all the exits are in case I have to dart out in an unexpected panic. ; )

Blabberig Student,
I completely agree with you on the whole idea of feeling comfortable in a classroom setting. It really doesnt concern me where I am going to give the speech, but the greatest fear derives from who my crowd is going to be. I think that most of us experience similar fears. I wish that public speaking were that easy, getting situated in an empty room, and possibly only directing the speech to your professor. Unfortunately, that was why the whole idea of Comm20 came to be. It is important to be confident and comfortable when delievering a speech in any type of setting. I can only tell you that I share the same fear, and believe that if atleast two of us share the same concerns, I am sure that a majority of the class feels the same way. I wich you the best in you speech prepartation!
Hey there! I can totally agree with you on how if a speaker is talking about things that are totally unrelated to you, you just end up not listening and finding something else to take up your time. On a specific occasion, for my sorority we had to attend meetings that talked about certain topics that can influence a persons life in college. The topic that did not appeal to me was the topic on “eating disorders.” On top of that, not one of my sorority sisters had any concern about the topic. We ended up sitting in the room, tuning out the speaker. It wasn’t that the speaker wasn’t information and entertaining, the topic just didn’t interest me what so ever. So I do agree with making sure you can find a topic that can appeal to your audience in some way.
I totally agree with you! It is usually not the place I am giving the speech that gives me butterflies, but instead it is all of the people that are going to fill up that room!! However, I also think that it is important to get to know the surroundings of the place you are going to speak at because then you will at least feel comfortable in the area in which you deliver the speech. I think knowing the area you will speak at is especially important when you are using equipment because if something goes wrong it may just add to a person’s stress level!! Good luck on your speech!
